I purchased the picks to clean various caliber pistols and long guns. They're not the strongest material, but for the price ($4.80) they're a good bargain. They're easily strong enough to clean off any parts that have been pre-soaked. I think if you need anything stronger than this, you should clean your guns more often or just use more Hoppes/CLP.
Lyman has been around for a long time. These are great tools. Remember when you clean the parts of a semi auto you aren't stripping paint off a dresser. You are cleaning delicate parts of a gun. You soak parts that have heavy carbon on them and then lightly brush them. You are also careful with picks not to pull off parts that you don't want off. Like vary small springs. Therefore the picks should last a long time.
Why would someone pay good money for a polymer frame gun and then try to save a dollar or two on supplies to clean it!? This will scrape that carbon buildup and gunk from barrel bushings, slides, and all other components of your weapon without scratching your fine finish or damaging your weapon's metal.
These aren't meant to be metal scrapers. They are non-scratching plastic that get into tiny spaces and remove build-up where patches, Q-tips, or bore-snakes can't go. They are flexible, and the pointed ones are very pointed for small spaces or intersecting surfaces.
These are the types of tools you may never need, but are irreplaceable when you do nee them. As advertised, I use them to either brush out hard-to reach places, or to push a cotton patch. I do not think there is a right or wrong method. Not unlike all of those doo dads on your dentist's tray - if you need it, then it's here.
Note, these are not a rigid plastic, but have some flex. I find that to be useful.
Used these to clean face of pistons. They last a reasonable period of time even with very aggressive use.
The brushes are double ended. The small end is great for getting in the grooved of a bolt or other tight spots. The picks are well constructed, and I really like the fact they're brass, making them less likely to scratch gun surfaces. Having the case is a boon, because it helps keep me organized, so I know where they are.
Excellent set for the price. Know going in that the brushes are disposable and they can easily be acquire in sets of three from just about any sporting goods store or online. The metal picks are sharp and of decent quality for this price. Worked great first time cleaning after a day at the range.
